Hand Marbled Paper: An Endangered Craft

What is paper marbling?

Hand-marbled paper is created by hand swirling inks or paints on a carefully concocted, gelatinous mixture, then transferring the design to paper.

This ancient technique originated in Asia around the 12th century and was later refined in Europe, is used for bookbinding, decorative projects, and crafts because of its beautiful, non-repeating patterns.

Each sheet is a unique piece of art, though variations within a series are common.
