This print depicts a scene from the ballad 'Riddles Wisely Expounded', which was known as early as the 15th century. In the ballad a virgin is confronted by the devil, who requires that she answers his riddles in order to be free.
Here, the cloaked devil poses his questions to the maiden. They are posed in front of a background inspired by medieval millefleurs designs and editions by William Morris's Kelmscott Press. Along the border are two of the devil's riddles: 'What ys hyer than ys the tre?' (heaven) and 'What ys deper than ys the se?' (hell).
