SOCKS is a colourful record of what happens when a whole primary school learns to darn. At its centre is a library of 488 socks, each stitched and mended by children, staff and families at Surrey Square Primary School in Southwark, using waste socks from the warehouse.
The artist darner Celia Pym ran 26 workshops at the school in early 2024, and the book follows the work from nursery to year 6 and on to the headteacher. It grew from Socks: The Art of Care and Repair, her exhibition commissioned by NOW Gallery in Greenwich, and includes her own mends for friends and family. Paperback, 152 pages, 195 x 260 mm.
You can watch the skill arrive as the children get older, which makes the book a strong case for teaching hand skills early. It is also a good sourcebook for anyone with a drawer of holed socks.
