This is a small oak basket, woven from Scottish oak into a square base that rises into a rounded rim. At roughly 10 x 10 x 8 cm, it sits in the hand, a piece for the mantelpiece, the desk, the dressing table.
The form belongs to an old tradition of square-work baskets, where the maker starts with a flat base of crossed staves and works the weave up and outward, letting the geometry shift from square to round as the sides grow. It is a quiet bit of structural sleight of hand, and it asks for clean, even weaving to hold its shape.
The oak is cleaved and dressed by hand, worked while still green and pliable so it bends without fracturing. As it dries, the weave tightens and the basket settles into its final form, pale and close-grained.
