Life, Blue Stained Turned Vessel

A deep blue vessel, tall and tapering to a narrow foot, with a red spiral ledge winding from the bottom to the rim. Look closer and there are people on it: a woman pushing a pram, a man with a briefcase, a painter with his palette, a couple mid-argument, a queue of commuters. All of them on the same road, going round and up. The vessel is turned from a single blank and the spiral is cut into the wall of it, then painted, so the road is part of the pot rather than something stuck on. The blue is a stain thin enough that the grain reads straight through it. The figures are model railway scale, which is the joke: from across a room this is a large blue vase, and you have to walk up to it before anyone appears. It came second in the Master's competition at Wizardry in Wood in 2025, the Worshipful Company of Turners' exhibition. It is the least subtle piece Greg has made and the funniest: a life is a spiral staircase, everyone is on it, and nobody gets off.
