Mind Altering Objects, Turned Beech Vessel

by Greg Kent Art in WoodMade by a QEST ScholarPrice on application

Handmade to order, typically ready in 100 days.

A pale beech vessel with a magpie sitting at the top and a small wooden ladder leaning against the side, as though something has just been carried up, or taken away. The bird is the only colour on it. Seventy-five centimetres by twenty-five. The form is a plain turned vessel, and that is deliberate. Greg starts every piece from an idea rather than a drawing, then finds the shape that will carry it, and here the shape stays quiet so the two additions can do the work. It is turned green from salvaged beech, dried for two or three months, then finished. The subject is how an object can set the mood of a day, or of a life, and where the responsibility for that sits. One magpie is sorrow, if you believe it, and the ladder is either a way up or a theft in progress. Greg does not settle it for you. What interests him is that two people can stand in front of the same vessel and disagree about it out loud.
