Ooops! Too Late, Deep Hollowed Beech Vessel

by Greg Kent Art in WoodMade by a QEST ScholarPrice on application

Handmade to order, typically ready in 100 days.

A deep-hollowed beech vessel, seventy-five centimetres tall, with the rim slumping and running down the outside. The top edge has lost its shape and is pouring over itself, and the eye reads it as melting before it reads it as wood. Greg can hollow to eighty-five centimetres deep, a reach he learned from Keith Clark as part of his scholarship, and this piece uses most of it. It was turned wet from a single salvaged log, taken down to a wall a centimetre or two thick, dried for two or three months and finished over a fortnight. Four months from log to piece. He made it out of a settled belief that the tipping point in the climate crisis has already passed, while politicians watch through glasses focused on the length of an electoral cycle. The title is the whole argument. It is a large object and it is not decorative: put it in a room and it changes what the room is about.
