Say What You See, Turned Beech Vase

by Greg Kent Art in WoodMade by a QEST ScholarPrice on application

Handmade to order, typically ready in 100 days.

A beech vase carrying a pair of red lips and a single lens, set into the pale wood so they read like a face that has been reduced to the two parts that matter. The lips are the only colour on the piece. Turned green from salvaged beech and left unstained, so the grain and any rot in the log show through as they are. Greg works this way on purpose: the wood is the material and the subject at the same time, and staining it would hide the thing he is asking you to look at. It is a challenge to people who live their lives through a screen. Greg would rather talk about what you have actually seen and stood in front of than what you watched somebody else see. The mouth and the lens are the whole of the argument, and the title is an instruction.
