A two-handled beech vessel with a seam of black rot running the whole length of it, pooling at the foot and spreading, with a small figure lying face down in the pool. The rot was in the log when it arrived. Greg turned the piece around it rather than cutting it out, which is how he works: the design starts as a picture in his head and then adapts to whatever the wood turns out to be hiding. On a piece this size that is a gamble taken two days into a four month job, with no way back. He reads the seam as the oil slick on an energy executive's tie. Hands in pockets, total indifference to the damage, and the significance of the thing he is wearing passing him by entirely. It is the second piece Greg has made about the climate, and the angrier of the two.
