It is a replica of the Acheulean hand axes of the Lower Palaeolithic, which were made across Africa, Asia and Europe and are typical of sites associated with our ancestor Homo-Erectus. It is thought that Acheulean technologies first developed about 2 million years ago, derived from the more primitive Oldowan technology in the Great Rift Valley.
James Francis knaps each one by hand in Kent, using the same early techniques to strike flakes from alternate faces until the stone is thin and even. The tools of this kind are thought to have been used for butchering large game, with strong arguments for them also being the first artistic items. It comes as it left the knapper's hands, with no use wear.
