Kingston upon Thames has the Thames at its best when the light goes. The river bends, the architecture along the bank softens, and the sky over the water turns the warm palette that painters keep coming back to. Joshua's miniature catches that moment: soft brushstrokes, a warm palette, the dynamic edge of evening cloud meeting still water. The format is small, the work is finished. Joshua treats his miniatures as completed paintings rather than studies for larger work, and the 10cm boards hold their colour and atmosphere as cleanly as anything four times the size. Joshua paints British rivers in oil, the Thames mostly, with a few weeks each year on the Solway coast. The light he chases is the light Constable chased: dusk along Pen Ponds, morning on the towpath, the moment the tide turns at Teddington Lock.
