    ONE OF A KIND
    Carved wood sculpture
    £1200
Made in Britain · by Andy Matthews|Arrives Mon 2 Nov, UK delivery from £5.90|14-day returns

This sculptural piece was a collaboration between Andy and Bee. Bee said she would love to carve a Kingfisher but wans't sure how to display the finished piece.

Andy had some spaleted Beech (Fagus Sylvatica) in the workshop and thought the spalting looked like weed in a river. Thats how this stared, Andy turned a plate and added the ripples to create the pond, the plinth it sits on has been turned from a piece of Apple Wood (Malus Domestica) which had been left on the shelf because is had split during the drying process. Initially this piece was just polished, but it didn't look right so after much discussing it was heavily scorched to add some texture to the piece.

This was when Bee used a piece of Lime wood (Tilia Europaea) which is perfect for hand carving, to create the Kingfisher, this was then airbrushed with spirit stain to create the bird, the pond was also airbrushed to add the reflection of the kingfisher and a representation of the fish.

    Turn and Burn UK

Andy and Bee Matthews are a husband and wife who make together. He turns the timber; she burns and paints into it. Everything starts as a storm-felled or diseased tree from a sawmill ten minutes from their door.

    • Andy Matthews turning a pale blank at a lathe in a workshop, shavings coming off the tool.
    • Bee Matthews holding a turned wooden plate on her lap and working a burned line into it with a pyrography pen.
    • A large bark-covered trunk lying on a sawmill bed with the sawyer standing behind it.
    • A woodturning club audience seated in rows facing a lathe set up at the front of a hall.
    • The open back of a pickup loaded with tool cases and a carved wooden Turn and Burn sign.
    • Andy and Bee Matthews side by side, she holding a pyrographed peacock panel and he a turned wooden stand.
